This month, “Build fast loading websites & your hosting internet speed” is about how fast your website loads across all platforms, what can be done to improve the user experience and keep them on your site.
Believe it or not, on some things the internet is VERY black and white.
Aesthetically pleasing and FAST
User Friendly and FAST
Work across ALL platforms and in every other instance you can think of, plus FAST!
FAST is the main keyword. With database driven sites being the norm today, how can you get them to load quickly but not look plain?
It’s in the design, it is in the hosting, and it is making the right choices.
HTTP/2 is a relatively new protocol, released back in May of 2015. This protocol allows multiplexing. A good example of where this would be useful is when you go to a site, it has one large image and several smaller ones. The resources are tied to the larger image, so the smaller ones look like they are taking longer to load. With HTTP/2 however, it can multitask. No longer will things load one at a time, but AT the same time. This can boost your website load time by up to 50%!
One drawback is unless you run your own server, it will be up to your hosting company on if it is even available, or finding out if they plan on moving in that direction down the road.
Having your site compressed/minified will go a long way in speeding up your site. Your scripts and CSS files add a lot of requests to the server. By combining your CSS and scripts, you end up with fewer request. The end result is your site gets a boost in load time. There are many plugins for WordPress sites that will handle this without you having to know scripting, and hand methods by a designer for HTML5 sites.
Caching a site can offer an increase in load times as your database files get transformed to html versions, which will make the page load quicker when a browser doesn’t have to call on the database time and time again. This is something that will help your site load quicker on a phone if you are not near a WiFi connection.
You can set a time delay for when the cached files will be deleted and your newer pages made.
Standard shared hosting is dead, or at least it should be. The days of shoving as many websites on a server, without increasing resources and not being on an Solid State Drive (SSD) are numbered.
Cloud Hosting, with PHP 7 installed on it will do wonders at speeding up your site. Another advantage to Cloud Hosting is you are mirrored on 3 different servers (quantity may vary from hosting to hosting company) which will help your site stay up if one server should fail. It just switches to another. There is also not as many sites added to each server, which helps the resources server everyone in a much better fashion.
Making The Right Decision
With so much on the line, with so many people skimming a site today, how can you ensure you’re making the right choices from beginning to end? By going with a professional and not a quick theme scheme. Those that use the same templates over and over again, that offer template Search Engine Optimization and not Custom SEO, Analytics, image customization, and making sure any of what you just read above is added to your site are a waste of time and money. If you end up not liking the service, you are likely not going to be able to take your site with you.
Today’s web design professionals do so much more than just build a site. They have to know how to make a site faster, to make the site look the way you want it to, helping you rank higher in search engines with tailored processes and not the one size fits all that many of the “template” companies out there use today.
The end result is by choosing a professional today, can save you from having a painstaking experience with template companies tomorrow.
Here at Beyond Web Design, we will walk you through each step of the way to make sure the end result of your new site is something you will be happy with from A-Z.
