The mobile world just got better for those who really don’t want to scroll down past the Sponsored (pay per click) Ads on your mobile searches.
Google has started to list all of the Google Organic Mobile Search results first, starting with the Page 2 results. The ads will be pushed to the bottom. You still have to scroll through them to get to page 3, but there is more of a chance you will find what you are looking for before you get that far.
This has advantages, disadvantages, and may be not a lot about nothing.
Having the results first means people don’t have to scroll through the Sponsored Ads. While those ads won’t cost you a penny, just that they are ads can make someone associate it with something they don’t want to see. Organic results can give you more options, most time better options.
If you’re a company that makes money from the leads of a click through campaign, this could hurt your bottom line. If with what you pay per click falls onto the 2nd and 3rd page results, people may never see your ad.
A Lot About Nothing:
For just a minute, think about your own search habits when using a mobile device. How often do you ever get to a second page of results? A third page? Today’s world is about instantaneous results, so I will guess for most, the second page is viewed under 30% of the time. I know for me, unless I am bored, I almost never look at a second page of results. The 30% turns into 10% for me.
Is it nice to have the results page show Organic Results first? A RESOUNDING YES! Will it help make your searches become more reasonable? YES! Could it have no impact on your current way of searching? Yes. This is a cool step forward because Google never had to make this change. They should be commended at putting the user first!
Would it have been nice to use the same method on the front page of results? Of course, but then searching the web may become a pay per click, for the user. From Altavista to Google, searching the web has been free. How a search was performed then and how it is now are two different animals. Today you can get much more accurate results. It took a lot of money and research to get us to this point. Let those who want to pay for the ad continue, while we site back and enjoy what that gets us for search results.
